American student in Krakow

Many of us know Polish American students who study or have studying been in Krakow.  Kent lives in Houston, he is not Polish, and decided to spend a year in Krakow.
                                                                                   How does he see Poland?

Hey guys,

I have a bit more time to write today. I'm in the computing center at the place where I'll be studying! Oh man... I've had a day... but Krakow... well... now I remember why I wanted to come here. It's just amazing thus far.

This morning in Amsterdam, I had a bit of a problem. Because SkyEurope is a lowcost airline... they're probably looking for anyway to make money. Anyway... they'll only let someone have 15 kilos of luggage... and I had more. And for every extra kilo... they made me pay 8 EUROS!!!! AHHHH!!! So I tried to empty as much as I could into my backpack, etc... but it ended up costing 96 Euros. So I guess that trip cost A LOT more than expected. And to make matters worse... they wouldn't let me pay with my debit cards... so I had to pay with the Southwest card. So the only concellation that I got from the situation was that we might be making some miles off of the airline industry. Ughh...anyway... I'm sorry about that... but this is Europe, I guess.

So I was pretty annoyed until I saw the Polish countryside from the plane. It was so gorgeous coming into the city. And we took a taxi into town... and the drive was so pleasant. The weather is nice, etc. Anyway... we got to my dorm... and well... it's hard to explain. I'll take some photos and give you an idea. It's charming in the sense that it's like you'd expect from a Polish dormroom. It's pretty bare-bones... but maybe that's good for a change. It can't hurt... and it's shelter ...so that's good. It's not bad by any means... it's just fine. Small, and fine! haha! But the dorm as a whole is pretty cool. Just like you'd imagine an apartment block to be. But it has a barber, ATM machine, reception, grocery, etc. So that's good. It's got more than my dorm at home had... haha... and think about how much less we're paying. Anyway... I took out 1000 zloty today... and I had to pay a deposit on the dorm. I'll probably end up moving at the end of September, says the lady taking me around.

Anyway...we're about to go to the square for a few minutes. So I've got to go hop on the tram. I would text you to let you know how it goes... but I suppose that's not really possible! Talk to you soon!

Cheers,

Kent
