MARCUS DAVID
LEUCHTER, 99, passed away Friday, December 5, 2008 after a brief
illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Sophie
Theresa. Both Marcus and Theresa were Holocaust survivors. A lawyer in
Poland, he received his Doctor of Laws from the Jagiellonian University
in Krakow, one of the oldest universities in Europe. He came to the
United States in 1946 and devoted himself to professional fundraising to
build the nascent State of Israel. After his retirement, Marcus immersed
himself in Holocaust education, focusing not only on honoring his
parents and others who perished, but also the Righteous Gentiles, both
Poles and Germans, who risked their lives to save Jews, including Marcus
and Theresa. A member of the Board of Directors of Holocaust Museum
Houston, he spoke frequently to community groups of children and adults
throughout the city, including at Rice University. He was awarded the
prestigious Amicus Poloniae (Friend of Poland) Award by the Polish
government for his work to unite the Polish and Jewish communities.
Marcus is survived by his loving children, Linda Addison and her husband
Max of Houston; Dr. Andrew Leuchter and his wife Elizabeth Kemper of Los
Angeles; his grandchildren Alexandra Addison, David Leuchter, Richard
Leuchter, and Michael Leuchter. He also is survived by his beloved
friend and companion, Iga Henderson. A funeral service will be held at
