„Generations” is atypical and original documentary film by Janusz Zaorski, who is a screenwriter, director and editor of the film. Zaorski is also a film critic and a historian of modern times of Poland. The Wroclaw Film Studio asked Zaorski to make a film about the studio on the occasion of its jubilee. He didn’t want to make a traditional jubilee film with interviews with employees of the studio or with artists who worked there, but he chose fragments of 39 feature films which were shot there to create a history of Poland starting with the WWII until now. There is no narration, but the guide to the film is Zbigniew Cybulski, one of the most famous Polish actors known for „Ashes and Diamonds” by Andrzej Wajda, the Oscar recipient . His roles are in many film fragments of this documentary but his character is recreated in scenes shot especially for this documentary film.
The film starts with fragments from „Generations”, a debut film by Andrzej Wajda. It’s about Poland under German Nazi occupation in 1939 and it was the first feature film shot in the Wroclaw Film Studio in 1953.

Ich fragmenty, poczynając od „Pokolenia” Andrzeja Wajdy, przez filmy Sylwestra Chęcińskiego, Wojciecha Jerzego Hasa, Kazimierza Kutza, Romana Polańskiego aż po Agnieszkę Holland, Krzysztofa Kieślowskiego, Wojciecha Marczewskiego, Krzysztofa Zanussiego i wielu innych, układają się w opowieść o Polakach od czasu okupacji hitlerowskiej, przez terror czasów stalinowskich, „naszą małą stabilizację”, marzec ’68, niespełnione nadzieje epoki gierkowskiej, stan wojenny aż po wybory 4 czerwca 1989 roku. Przewodnikiem po współczesnej Wytwórni i po Wrocławiu jest… Zbyszek Cybulski.
